EIGHT

With the Beverly Hills’ sun warming his shoulders on the back terrace of a rented villa, Levi adjusted the flame on a high tech outdoor grill. He and Kendra had checked in the day before and would stay for just two nights, but the exclusive property only leased in two-week stays, so Levi would have use of the place well after he needed it.

But he refused to skimp on the accommodations when he’d asked his brothers to join them for the next event on Kendra’s promotion campaign. Gavin and Quinton would be arriving shortly for a briefing from Kendra on what to expect at the Greener Planet event the next evening. Then, they’d spend the weekend in the villa’s guest quarters before flying back to Silent Spring, Montana, while Levi and Kendra continued on to stops in Denver and Seattle.

Closing the hinged lid on the heavy grill, Levi rechecked his preparations for a dinner by the pool while Kendra emerged from the huge, multi-slide glass doors that opened the villa’s kitchen and living areas to the fresh air. Dressed in a white silk sundress printed with a purple orchid, she wore her hair in a loose topknot and carried a covered white platter toward the grill.

The thin fabric of her dress blew lightly against her curves, outlining her frame in a way that made him ache for her. But then, that was the nature of being around this woman. He never stopped craving her. It didn’t matter that he’d witnessed the toll that messy relationships could take on a family after his father’s failures. Levi’s gaze sought out Kendra anytime they were in the same room.

Even so, he’d given her space after their talk in New York. She’d seemed genuinely surprised to learn about his motives for buying the Gargoyle King business from her dad. Levi didn’t know if she needed to fact-check his story, or if she’d simply wanted some breathing room to reconfigure her idea of him after the false perceptions of the past. Either way, he’d done all he could to give her time after the unexpected kiss they’d shared. He’d focused solely on work in their communications since then, but the grace period for not talking about their chemistry expired tonight. And somehow, the heat that had simmered on the back burner these last days already seemed to flame higher.

With her high heels clicking on the tiled floor surrounding the pool area, Kendra walked toward him, setting down the platter on a butcher block countertop in the outdoor kitchen. “The security system just chimed with your brother’s arrival at the gate out front,” she informed him as she rinsed and dried her hands at the sink near the grill, two thin silver bangles jingling. “I thought you might want to put the steaks on soon.”

“Thank you for bringing them out.” Standing at the head of the patio table, set with gray stoneware plates for the meal, he eyed the vase of flowers on the white linen runner—the decor another contribution she’d made to the meal.
